Our Roadrunner Varsity Basketball team is a two-time defending champion for Division 1 and Division 2 Basketball, holding a 47 – 1 total record. The 2019-2020 Winter Season had many great accomplishments for our Varsity team led by Coach Derek Freeman. The Varsity team moved to Division 3 and won the State Championship. The team was invited to and participated in the Tarkanian Classic Tournament in Las Vegas, NV. They competed in the SPA Tournament and won. Coach Freeman was named the Coach of the Year for Division 3 through the Canyon Athletics Association. We also had one of our players voted Player of the Year for Division 3, along with 3 other players receiving honorable mentions for the season. We are looking forward to playing some great games this year.

Derek Freeman
Varsity Men’s Head Coach

Derek Freeman – Coach Freeman is originally from Philadelphia, PA. He grew up with his Father (Greg), Mother (Andrea), Sister (Renata) & Brother (Greg Jr.). He is married with three children, wife (Janelle), daughter (Jazmyne) & sons (Dj & Mason). He attended High School at George Washington Carver of Engineering & Science. He played under legendary High School Coach Charles Brown. After High School he enlisted into the United States Air Force for 4 ½ Years. He was stationed at Kirtland Air Force (Albuquerque New Mexico), Coach Freeman traveled around the entire United States. 

He was selected twice to play for the All-Air Force Basketball (2006-2007), training Camps in Colorado Springs, Co & Dover, DE. The Air Force won Gold Medals both years in the All Armed Services Tournaments. Coach Freeman was also a part of the New Mexico All Stars Travel team 2006-2008 under Legendary UNM Lobo Kevin Scarborough. Coach Scarborough helped secure several scholarships at all levels!  In 2008 he received a full ride scholarship to the University of New Mexico Highlands. Played 4 years (Two-year team captain) under another coaching legend Joe Harge. New Mexico Highlands set a NCAA record for the biggest turnaround in the 2008-2009 Season. He graduated with an Associates in Health and a Bachelors in Exercise Science. Coach attended the Master program (Sports Administration) during his Senior Season. 71-40 Record overall at NMHU.

After College he moved to Gilbert, AZ to coach and train part-time. He began with Club Basketball programs Arizona Prestige, Az Firestorm & Tres Hoops from 2013-2017. In 2016 Coach began assistant coaching at San Tan Charter School. San Tan Charter won the State Title in 2017 and 2018. Coach Freeman was named Head Coach in the 2018-2019 Season and the team reached the Final Four in the State Playoffs. In the 2019-2020 San Tan Charter won their 3rdState Championship in Basketball. 

Coach Freeman loves his family and is thankful for every coach & teammate that helped him along his journey. Some people Coach looked up to during his journey are his Father and Brian Dawkins. He still enjoys playing with his team in Albuquerque (Team Fire).

Born and raised in Rancho Cucamonga, California, Coach Cierra played for one of the top AAU programs in the country, Cal Sparks. After being ranked among the top female high school athletes in her graduating class nationwide, she went on to play at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill, NC) and the University of Louisville (Louisville, KY) before ultimately graduating from San Diego State (San Diego, CA).  Since then, she has been playing professionally overseas for 5 years in countries such as Poland, Turkey, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Mozambique. During her off season, Coach Warren coached for Gilbert Christian High School , UH Elite, Open Gym Premier. Coach Warren joined San Tan for the 2019-2020 school year. She headed up our Women’s Varsity and Girl’s Jr. High Basketball teams. Our Women’s Varsity team made it to the playoff games in the Winter 2019-2020 season, further than the team has ever gone before. Coach Warren believes in creating a family bond on her team and instills strong work ethic on and off the court and believes in creating and fostering strong character on and off the court. 

Our Intramural team is the cornerstone of our program. Open to boy’s grades 5th – 8th who are interested in starting their Basketball journey. Learn foundational skills, improve athletic stamina, and join a great group of student athletes to represent San Tan Charter School.

Open to boy’s in grades 5th – 8th with Basketball experience beyond our Intramural team, our STCS Junior High Basketball program has two teams. These teams consist of coachable players participating at our highest Junior High level.

Our Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball teams are made up of our most elite basketball players. Our High School team began in 2016, winning the Division 1 Championship our first year out. Continuing with great leadership from our coaches and returning players, our men’s team has continued its winning streak as two-time defending champions across Division 1 and Division 2. In the 2019-2020 school year they were the state champions for Division 3.

Entering our third year as a Varsity program, our women’s basketball team is thrilled to be representing San Tan Charter School.
